Langkawi is a beautiful island that is fine as long as you do not want to party until late into the night (and I don't!!). Take a drive around the island as it is fascinating, particularly up to the jungle in the north. Little India is an excellent, small and remarkably cheap Indian restaurant which is 5 Ringgits away in a taxi. Also if you have a car, try the Barn Thai Restaurant which has an interesting location.

We found the food in both the hotel and restaurants extremely palatable but were dissapointed by the small number of good quality restaurants in the resort which meant that we had to visit some places more than once. Particularly would recommend restaurant Del Mar in Pelangi and also the Barn Thai. Travelling around by taxi was extremely cheap as were most things e.g . 1.5 hr 40 mile round trip to Kuha was 20 Ringis (£4).

Local restaurants were a good standard, from the local fare (where fun was had deciding what would turn up, once we had ordered) to the more tourist-oriented outlets. We particularly enjoyed the Red Tomato and Champo-Champo, both close to the Pelangi.
We hired a car from the main street, which was cheap and reliable, enabling much sight-seeing to be accomplished at our pace. Hikes up to the Seven Wells waterfall were a good workout, and well worth the effort. The cable car jaunt was good value, as was the crocodile farm. Underwater World was a fabulous experience. There are also some wonderfully-deserted beaches away from the main commercially developed areas that deserve a visit and are presumably kept secret for the islanders to use.

Langkawi is a fantastic island. The scenery is stunning. It's well worth going on the cable car just for the views - although if you don't like heights, you've been warned! The Barn Thai is a fantastic restaurant set in the mangrove swamps - they also offer a collection service from/back to your hotel. The Lighthouse is another good restaurant to watch the sun go down over the sea from. The island is quite small and we hired a car and explored for a day when it was raining. There isn't much in the way of shopping, although we did find some lovely craft shops. Taxis are quite cheap (although a lot more expensive than KL) and handy.

Don't bother driving around the main island. There is nothing worth seeing except for the 30 mins cable car ride up and down the 708m high mountains.
If you're hoping to look for more interesting restaurants somewhere on the island besides the Rasa Restaurant along Pantai Cenai, there is no other. The hotel itself serves pretty good food if you don't mind paying for it.
The massage at the Sandy Spa was a huge disappointment. I felt like I was being basted with oil, that's all. Not relaxing at all. Aromatherapy oil? Forget it, it's only olive oil with a hint of aroma oil.

Very convenient, 15 min walk to the aquarium, "Bon Ton" is very close, and a lot of possibilities for different food around the hotel.

Langkawi is a lovely island although the beach and the water are not the best in Malaysia. Best way to see it is to hire motorbikes and explore, can also find nicer beaches than Pantai Cenang this way. For nightlife, the Reggae bar on Pantai Cenang is the best bet. Malaysian restaurant part of Sunvillage in a fantastic place and the Thai in the Pelangi Beach resort is also very good.

I have to say that I am very disappointed with Langkawi overall. It's a pretty island, with a coastline that is spectacular in places, especially for those of us used to the flatness of Singapore. But not a lot is made of it for tourists, especially eating out, with the resultant need to "stay in" as mentioned above.
We took a cab around to the other resorts on Cenang beach - and were unimpressed. Those we looked in were easily beaten by the Sheraton Perdana. However, there is a lack of interesting places to eat - we did find one "The Lighthouse" which we would heartily recommend, we did not find a better place to drink a sundowner.
We also took the snorkelling trip to Pulau Payer with Langkawi Coral. That was good, though it was expensive compared to rivals (RM720 for 2 ad 2 ch ). They have exclusive use of the floating reef platform, which is probably worth some extra cost. However, on our trip they ran out of water after each person had about one cup (water is included in the price) and therefter one had to buy cold drinks. I am not sure if this was a deliberate ploy or a botch up, as one of their own dive masters later emerged from the water and was furious to find the water had run out. Lets give them the benefit of the doubt, but if it was a botch up, it was a serious one in 35 degrees, and bearing in mind the price.
The snorkelling was good, with many species to see, including the chance to snorkel among black-tip reef sharks. It was not too busy when we were there, but even so in-water collisions were a hazard, if the tour is full, I would say avoid it, the noise and thrashing in the water will make it unbearable.
I went diving with east marine, who operate out of Langkawi Yacht Club. They have good well-trained Padi/SSI and BSAC dive-masters, and their own boat. Gear was in very good condition, and they knew their dive sites well. In contrast to the snorkelling trip, water was plentiful, maybe they could give lessons to Langkawi Coral. The cost for a two tank dive was less than a day snorkelling with Langkawi Coral.
The main drawback is the site - the fact is that Pulau Payer is not, as the literature would have it "The World's Most Beautiful Marine Park", and anyone who thinks it is needs to get out around the region a bit more - almost any of the reefs around Tioman for example offers a greater variety of coral, and just as many fish species. The water clarity at Payer at this time of year is also poor - no more than 8m - although I understand it is better from November to Feb during the NE Monsoon.

Reall enjoyed the Rhu restaurant, but the Saffron was also quite good. Didn't really go anywhere, because the resort itself was just so nice.
