Stayed at  Langkawi Village Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
Langkawi is a not-too-crowded place where you can get a curry and a beer on the beach....paradise.

Stayed at  Casa Del Mar - Langkawi, Malaysia.
Malay & Thai cuisines served in this restaurant at Sun Village taste good and value for money. A set dinner menu (six-course)for 2 is priced at Ringgit 150/-+++.

Stayed at  Kampung Tok Senik Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
Langkawi offers the visitor a real taste of laid-back rural Malaysia as well as beautiful beaches and stunning coastal scenery. Getting around is easy - the Kg. Tok Senik staff are happy to arrange taxis and there are also a number of in-house options including a minivan, a 'limo' and the only London taxi on the island!

We took a taxi to Pantai Cenang and spent a relaxing day on the beach, although we could have opted for various activities such as jet-skiing, paragliding or island-hopping if we had felt the need to be more active. On our last full day we hired a Kancil and explored the rest of the island. First we went north and took a stroll along the beach at Tanjung Rhu, then west to check out the facilities at The Datai, finally heading 'home' via Burau Bay in the south. Later that evening we drove to the Casa del Mar at Pantai Cenang for dinner on the terrace overlooking the beach. The food, described as 'Western/Japanese fusion', was of a high standard, the service was fast and efficient and I had a very enjoyable meal in a picturesque setting.

As our flight was scheduled for late afternoon the next day, we requested and were readily granted a late checkout at no extra charge, so we extended our car hire and drove to the main town, Kuah. Unfortunately it was raining so we spent most of our time there in the shopping centre, but were pleasantly surprised to find a good selection of quality handicrafts which were a definite cut above the usual 'tourist tat'one often finds in such places. All in all we enjoyed our trip and Langkawi is a place I am sure we will visit again.

Restaurants are very good. The fact that Langkawi is a duty free destination oils the wheels.

met local people, they showed us around, best restaurants at the beach, best fish, best party... only had one total day, so no time for island tour etc. langkawi is the paradise!

Stayed at  Tanjung Rhu Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
With such a wonderful hotel we did not want to go visiting but did visit the night market in the main town we wish we had not bothered as there was a thunderstorm and the streets were like rivers so the market was packing up as we got there, it did save us a trip the next day as we went on to visit the town which we had booked for the next day. Well worth the Inclusive deal as we could eat in any restaurant from the al acarte menu and have as many non alcholic drinks as we liked and also from the mini bar and room service. Our baggage was not the only thing overweight on the journey home!!

Best way to go around in Langkawi is to hire a car, rates are betweem RM 40 to RM 70 a day. Within 2 days one can cover the entire island and all the tourist and non-tourist attractions. Due to stormy weather we could not not do the boat trips but the Mangrove tour was highly recommended by locals and visitors alike. Local food is cheap and available in several shack restaurants around the island. English is understood and sometimes spoken in all public places like eateries, shops etc.

As Langkawi is a duty free island, some goods were cheaper here than the mainland. In particular, wine was affordable and beer was very cheap. The Komplex Handicraft was worth a visit with good quality products for sale although the place is much smaller than the equivalent in Kuala Lumpur. We used taxis to travel around but this could work out to be expensive if wanting to visit many different places. The island is beautiful and if we return some day we shall consider renting a car.

Good choice of local restaurants within walking distance. Try Orkid - excellent seafood at ridiculously cheap prices. Not good for snorkelling as no coral and limited visibility.

H Grimston 22 March 2002
Stayed at  Grand Continental Langkawi - Langkawi, Malaysia.
The hotel is ideally located for the person who is on a three or four day trip to the island. Hire a bike direct from the Jetty and splash out an extra RM10 for a 110cc bike, it's worth it, but make sure you have your international driving license, they are very strict. Also purchase your day trip for the snokelling from there to. Dont bother with the floating platform go with Coral Island tours. By haggling we got the trip for RM90 instead of RM120. Well worth it. The fish were more extensive in such a small reef than what I remember seeing on the Barrier reef.

To eat forget the main restaurants, go to the hawlers on the watersfront, the fish is half the price. Excellent food and very friendly people, especially 'No.1 Seafood Corner'. especially. My main advice for anybody who doesnt like spicey food, tell the restaurant "NO CHILLY". We said that to one chef at another hawkers stall, but we still had to fish out 20 chillies from the dish. Lovely island, wonderful people, excellent roads and very peaceful. Cant wait to go back.
