Malacca is great! There is easily enough historical "stuff" to see to last 2-3 days, and there are a lot of child-oriented amusement parks in the vicinity. Be sure to visit the Portuguese Settlement on Saturday night and listen to Portuguese folk songs and dancing.

Malacca itself is a very historically interesting town. I'm sure there is normally a fair bit to do. However, I wouldn't recommend it during Chinese New Year as most shops and tours are closed down over this period. I laughed when I read about the lucky draw for the best annecdote from your holiday as when we came back we realised that was why we didn't have a great time - there were no stories to tell, everything was shut!
