Stayed at Island Pacific Hotel - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

Being a little closer to a subway station would be nice. Seniors are free on the Star ferry to Kowloon. It is easy to arrange there in shopping mall by theatre a quick harbour cruise which is nice. Convenient bus connection from bottom of peak tram to Star ferry. Excellent Moghul Indian restaurant at #52 Wyndam Street. Macao pleasant - easy to get around on public buses and great museum on top fort above old cathedral (or what's left of it). Maritime museum closed on Tuesdays. Lots of banks, but only one that seems to want to cash traverler's check is the Bank of China.

The trip was basically business but we were able to go to Stanley Market, Ladies Street, Ocean Park, and the Pacific Place. Not so good a weather, though, as it was raining hard most of the time. Transpo was easy aboard the coded bus and the tram. Got a little mixed up, though, using the MTR. I loved the speed with which the Airport Express took us from the airport to Central!
Apart from the hotel, we got to eat at nearby Chinese restaurants. The food was great, yet inexpensive, but we had a hard time communicating with non-English speaking waiters. Though we literally had to point at other tables to order what looked good, I guess it's part of the trip's excitement.
One important note on the new HK airport. While it looks great and modern, it's a real hassle going to the Gates. Airport's so huge, the Gates are so far betweens!

Stayed at Nikko Hong Kong, Hotel - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

Kowloon was fine for walking. The Discovery Bay ferry to Hong Kong central was directly below the hotel, and we took it, as well as the Peak tram shuttle bus from Queen's Pier to get to the Peak. All of this worked fine, but the shuttle bus on the Hong Kong side was a bit slow in arriving (20-minute wait). I would recommend going to the Peak, but only on a day in which it is clear--the views are spectacular. Also, make an effort to get down to the Star Ferry pier and take the old standby to Wan Chai for a different perspective on Hong Kong. Shopping in Kowloon was a mixed bag, but I found the little shopping center across from the Grand Stanford Intercontinental (next to the Nikko) to have many reasonably priced Chinese gift items and clothing. The Galleria, directly across from the Nikko seems to carry only designer labels and is very expensive. In mid to late May, the weather was hot and humid--no jackets needed!

I was fortunate enough to have a friend in Hong Kong who showed me around. We visited the Po Lin Monestary in Lantau, home of the world's tallest Buddah. We took the tram to the top of Victoria Peak for a fantastic view of Hong Kong. We took the jet-foil to Macau and spent a day leisurely wandering the streets of this European City with an Asian flair. It is busy yet nowhere as frantic as Hong Kong. While I was in Hong Kong (Mar 4-11, 2001), the Hong Kong Flower show was taking place in Victoria Park. This was an unexpected treat with lavish landscapes, bonsai of all kinds, and other ornamental plant exhibits. I visited the many markets of HK, the ladies market, stanley market, night market, flower market, bird market, fish (ornamental) market, etc. I travelled around by the subway and buses (the buses require exact change) and occasionally taxi.
The train from the airport is an excellent choice. It is quick, economic and efficient. I would suggest buying an Octopus card while in HK, it allows you access to several modes of transportation...the subway being one. You can get a 3 day card for HK$200, $50 of which is refundable. You may add more money to the card if you stay longer. At the end of your trip you can get a refund for the remaining value of your card. I stayed in HK for 7 nights, I upgraded my card twice...once for HK$100 and another time for $200. I had a refund of $150 plus the $50 deposit for a total of $200...not bad.

Stayed at Marco Polo Prince Hong Kong, The - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

As our stay was very short we did not take any tours. We wanted to come earlier, but could not get a flight because of Chinese New Year, but Hong Kong is still a fascinating destination.

Stayed at InterContinental Hong Kong - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.

Was there during Chinese New Year, so many attractions were closed, but the shopping was world class, and the street stalls were also fun for bargains.
