Stayed at Novotel Peace Hotel Beijing - Beijing, China.
|
We saw most of the main sites in Beijing. We used taxis & subway & walked. We only used a tour bus for the Great Wall. The market on Sunday was absolutely brillant and a must if you are there over a weekend - the biggest we have seen in China.

Stayed at Broadway Mansions Shanghai - Shanghai, China.

Shanghai museum very good, Old shanghai too touristy for me, I expected more at the Bund but a pleasant stroll none the less.
For me it was a mistake arriving during the May workers holiday (7 days from may 1st) it was too crowded and hard to get anywhere or do anything.

Stayed at Landmark Hotel Canton - Guangzhou, China.

Guangzhou is cleaning up its act. The streets are cleaner and better lit, the taxis efficient and use the meter. Still polluted though. Taxis easy and cheap to get around. Dinner on the river at white swan is nice. Note trade Fair is moving from its current site next year so China Hotel will lose its arrogant smug position to fleece visitors. getting there from Hong Kong is very easy by bus or train. Bus is very cheap and always available whereas the train can get very heavily booked. Bus took 2.5 hours door to door but took longer back as HK customs are more fussy.

Stayed at New World Courtyard Beijing - Beijing, China.

Beijing was great but the location of this hotel is not the best if your goal is touristing/sightseeing. If so, it's better to be on Wanfujing street. However, this one is closest to the pearl market (hongquaio).
One word of advice, don't go in December; it was freezing!!!

Stayed at City Hotel, Shanghai - Shanghai, China.
|
The detination of the hotel is good if you intend to spend time in the city centre. It is not far from all the touristic sites and there is a big shopping area with 2 big shopping malls nearby - about a 5 minute walk.
There are a couple of good restaurants nearby also - one of them is used like a *canteen* by our friends living in Shanghai - good food, clean and good value for money. Having said that though, food is relatively cheap in Shanghai, for 400 (about 50 USD) Yuan you can feed 4 people very nicely, with 7 dishes and a soup. September to December is a good time to visit Shanghai because the weather is nice, and especially if you like eating crabs.

Stayed at Shangri-la Hotel Shenzhen - Shenzhen, China.
|
The Chinese Cultural village theme park in Shenzen was a pleasant surprise - very well done with all major Chinese cultures represented through dramatic shows and exhibitions. Don't miss the nightly parade there.<
If you arrive in Shenzen with luggage and plan to walk the few hundred yards to the Shangrila, be prepared to deal with people who want to carry your luggage for tips. They were persistent to the point of being almost threatening in nature. If I did it again (which I probably wouldn't and would just take a cab the short distance) , I would accept the help rather than fight them off for the entire walk - would have been a lot less aggravating and only cost a few RMB.

Beijing as a city is huge! And that made me hate her the first 2 times visited her, on the this time I managed to see all the wonderful places it holds with in her, everybody knows the touristic places, but don't forget to go out early in the mornning to watch thee Chinese street wakenes, and at evenning time: dancing in the streets, wonderful local markets in small streets.

Stayed at Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.

Great city with plenty of wonderful sights with very friendly people and all at a very reasonable price. Beijing is the safest and cleanest city I have been to and I've been to a few! The Temple of Heaven and the summer palaces are a must see and the Great Wall at Sa ma tai was very picturesque but a hard climb . There are more restaurants than cars and taxi's and feet are the only transport we used . Driving or cycling would be a very very scary experience as is crossing the road !!!
We enjoyed it so much we have already decided to return for the Olympics in 2008.
Happy travels.

Stayed at Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.

If you're visiting Beijing during national day next year, don't go to the Forbidden City, Tiannemen Sq or the Summer Palace - they are so full of Chinese tourists visiting from out of town its just too crowded. Instead head to the Wall were its a bit quieter and visit the other destinations either before or after.
