Stayed at  Cititel Penang - Penang, Malaysia.
We only stayed one night but location was good and close to some british bars which was handy and also short walk to china town and also Komtar which is a large super mall with everything you would want to find in there.

Whilst wandering the night markets, don't be tempted to cross the road to the big club with the dolphin statue thingies out the front. We noticed some cultural show happening on stage so went in for a look. No cover charge to get in, but what prices for a drink was absolutely ridiculous.

Penang is such a beautiful island, it's a cross between Bangkok (a little dirty) but not as smoggy with car pollution and Florida. It's really a sweet place. I went two weekends in a row...I went to the Butterfly Farm which I thought was really great as you can pick up the butterflies and but them on your hand carefully. Definitely check out the Kek Lol Sei Temple...it's so beautiful. You must take a taxi there, but the taxis in Penang do not run by meter, you MUST ask for the price beforehand.

Getting back from the temple is somewhat difficult though. You must go through a cave of street vendors as you proceed down the mountain. At the bottom of the mountain, there is a bus stop...there are NO taxis! So, make sure you know where the bus stop is...everyone speaks English or Cantonese. The Malays are proficient conversational speakers, which is great for us English speakers.

My favorite pub/bar is LEVEL ONE which is in Chinatown, upstairs of Oriental Hotel. Downstairs, there is a japanese karaoke bar, which is cheap by U.S. standards. Also, there's a fun music, but no dancing place called "Commons". Of course, when in Southeast Asia, you must try the food hawk stalls. It's like the mall, you go up to the vendor, tell them your table number, order, and they bring your food to you and you pay them as you are served. I'm definitely going back...heard the Northam Hotel is a great, great hotel to stay at for only 18USD PER NIGHT. I'm going to try that hotel my next trip. Have fun!

Penang is fabulous! great sights, very historical, people are lovely and the food is scumptous. Though its an island, the beaches are rather disappointing and dirty.

We did not do much sight seeing while we were in Penang. The Lounge area is comfortable and the band is exceptional. We will be looking forward to visiting the area with our children and staying in your hotel again.

Stayed at  Ferringhi Beach Hotel, Penang - Penang, Malaysia.
I drove to Penang from Singapore. The journey was good. My second visit there. This time round, there are more eating places near the Batu Ferringhi area. The food there is definitely still one of the best around. The seaview is gorgeous too. Georgetown's traffic seems to be better and the road is smoother to travel. The night scene is rowdy and fun to hang out.

Lots of kids and overall a pretty boring place for single people.

Lots of things to do around the hotel...it's location was great. There are several pub/clubs nearby, street hawkers, 7-11, and a short walk from KOMTAR building.

J Evans 07 July 2002
Stayed at  Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort - Penang, Malaysia.
Over the years, the surrounding community of Batu Ferringhi has taken on a life of its own. At night, the road outside the hotel comes alive with stalls selling an astonishing variety of products, while the night markets offer an incredible array of ethnic cuisines at hawker stall prices. All of it is safe to eat, and everything that I tried was authentic and delicious. In addition, there are mini-marts for those who wish to avoid the in-room mini-bar, and internet cafes for those who wish to avoid the higher prices in the hotel business centre. Those who wish to spend all of their time in Georgetown will find the hotel a bit distant; it's 30 minutes each way on the shuttle, or about 25-30 Ringgit for a cab that won't get you there much faster.

In any event, much of the action has moved out of Georgetown to suburbs like Batu Ferringhi, so for shopping and dining, there is increasingly little justification to concentrate on Georgetown proper. The city is best simply for walking through history: the Heritage Trust is the most active in Asia, and they have (and are) doing a wonderful job preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of this wonderfully diverse island. If Singapore is not to your liking, then Penang should be!
