If you like local food, my suggestion is to eat out at the nearby quiet town of Bandar Penawar; a 3 minute drive. The food is inexpensive compared to the fine establishments in the resort.
50RM will get you a seafood dinner for 2.
But this is possible only if you have a vehicle. The road to the town is actually dimly lit. The hotel staff will gladly give you directions. There is no public transport to the town from the resort.
There is also a few mini mart, stalls selling local snacks and a few restaurants. I have my lunch there on my first day. (RM20 for my whole family.)Mbr>
There is also a go-kart track nearby. The track is bumpy and the machine actually needs to be replaced. But for RM30 for 15-20 minutes of some thrills, you should'nt complain. The person in charge was kind enough to let my 2 year old daughter pillion on my kart for a few laps when there is no other kart on the track.
My advice is that you should never stay more than 2 nights here. On my previous trip, I stay for a night only.

I went to desaru by car, it was about one and a half hour drive from Johor, the difficulty level was low as there were signboards stating desaru everywhere. I spent almost three quarter of my time in the resort, there were no worries for meals, entertainments in the resort, but one point to note was that it can be quite boring in the night, so maybe the resort can arrange some nights entertainments or activities.

Desaru is quite a boring place during December, because the weather is not suitable for anything fun by the sea.

I wouldn't go to Desaru again. Many hotels in that area have closed down, the beaches aren't great and even if you have a car there's nothing much to do there. However it's like a 2 hour drive from Singapore so it's fine if/ when you have a car filled with kids. Malaysia has better beaches to offer. I wouldn't waste my time in Desaru again.
