There are very good restaurants in Siem Reap. The best are TELL restaurant and VICTORIA in hotel; food in hotel Bopha is also very good but plenty off tour buses come to eat here. If you want to drink something in evening; LAUNDRY and ZANZYBAR. Because of very hot weather, best way to visit temples is to hire a motorcycle taxi for around 7 a 10 dollars for the whole day in front of hotel.

Siem Reap is a great town but don't spend all your time there. Get out into the villages and see what the county is really like outside the tourist scene. Best restaurant: Khmer Kitchen across from the market. Best bar: the Anchor What? take a boat trip on the lake out to the floating village.

Siem Reap is a lovely little place. We thought we'd stay 3 nights and ended up there for a week. The main "street" where all the bars are is worth a visit. In particular the staff and owner at Brodies are super (and the food is excellent). Tigre du Papier shows free films every night (free if you buy a drink - no great hardship) based in the region e.g. Killing Fields, Tomb Raider. Finally, the "Khmer Kitchen" down an alley way beside "The Angkor What?" is a super little restaurant. The food is excellent. Apparently Mick Jagger went twice when he was in Siem Reap.

The hotel sorted us out with a good, English speaking guide and car costing a total of US$40 per day. Is a must though if you want to fully appreciate the temples. The FCC and Red Piano are both very good places for the evening. And the Old Market offers very good stuff.

Some very good restaurants are in the old market area of Siem Reap, we tried "Soup Dragon" and "Khmer Kitchen", both were excellent. Transport in Siem Reap and around the temples is easy by Motorbike taxis (short distances) or Tuk-Tuks (longer distances, they are not the noisy and smelly ones like in Thailand, very pleasant!) Always negotiate the price before!
95% of the cambodian population are very poor, you get an impression of this as you travel out of town into the countryside to see the more remote temples or on the trip to Tonle Sap Lake. But most were very friendly, you can find smiles everywere.
If you can, visit swiss medic Dr. Beat Richner in his new children's hospital Jayavarman VII. Every Saturday at 7:15 pm he plays cello, shows films about his work in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and talks about the medical situation for children in Cambodia. Very impressive and recommended. Free of charge.

At Tonle Sap restaurant, I could enjoy Apsara show. It starts from 7:30pm and ends 8:40. The rate is only 12US$/pax. Served with Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Chinese.

The reason you go to Siem Reap is Angkor, there is no doubt about that. I purchased a 3 day pass which is more than enough to see the highlights and also some of the "lesser know" temples.
I had great success in hiring a guide through the taxi driver sent by the hotel, to pick me up from the airport. He spoke good English and 45 minutes after my arrival he came back to the hotel with Sophat who, though he appeared to be young, was government certified and had 5 years of leading tours under his belt and was very knowledgeable. The driver also took me to see an Aspara dance show one evening and remained at the restaurant to take me back to the hotel at its conclusion. There is also a dance show directly across from the hotel, but it was quite a bit more expensive. I would also recommend the Madame Butterfly restaurant with excellent food and nice atmosphere.

There are a lot of tourists visiting the temples, especially in the afternoons. On the main road alone, we noted six new large hotels under construction in Siem Reap, so the sooner you visit the better.
We saw the dance show at the Angkor Village hotel. Good setting but don't expect the dancing to be in the same league as, for example, Bali and Java.
A visit to the Silk Farm and the Floating Villages should not be missed. They both can be done in a morning if you start around 08.00. Do the Floating Villages first as there will be a lot of tourist boats later in the day. We used the same taxi driver (Hak) throughout our stay. Normal rate is 20 US dollars a day. Most of the drivers do not own their taxis but drive for someone else so do tip them.
If you ask any Cambodian about their families experiences during the Khmer Rouge days you are going to hear some terrible tales. It makes all you have read and seen more real but still unbelievable.
If you have time, visit Phnom Penh. It is a very interesting city and the Raffles Le Royal is a lovely hotel to stay in or visit for a drink. They seem to have a lot of deals on rooms even in the high season.

Please take note that you need a Temple Pass to visit the Temples. It is US$20 for a day or US$40 for three days. It covers all the temples in the area including Banteay Srei and Roulou area.
You only need a guide if you want someone to tell you every single small details on the walls. If not your guide book is good enough.
I toke only half a morning to finish seeing the Angkot Thom and temples around it. I asked Prinsep( Hotel Driver) to take me back to the hotel to take a rest and left for Angkor Wat again later in the late afternoon to see the Sun set.
Beers are very cheap there. Only about US$1.50 each. If you wanna go to any good Lounge, you can walk over to the Lobby Lounge at the Grand Hotel D'Angkor.( A five star Singapore Hotel)
Dont bother to stay any where need the airport. It is not near the Temples.
I gave up visiting the Floating Village when I was at the boat jetty. It was too smelly. Not worth seeing.
I guess for me the only expensive stuff that i paid was the Visa, Temple pass and Booking the driver for the day.
