HK is a good tourist destination for about
3 days. Beyond that, you really have to have personal contacts in order to get beneath the surfaces. Not easy to make such personal relationships because HK is all business.

For the Canton Fair you must get a prior invitation - seems a bit of a rigmarole - and it would help if there was a later last train back.

We had only two days in Hong Kong, but we did a lot of walking and saw a lot of interesting things.
Hong Kong is definitely a unique place. It's kind of West, kind of East. The British influence is evident throughout. Sort of what you get when you put the East and West together, I suppose. Neither predominate, but both come together to create a unique culture.
Hong Kong is alive like no other city I've experienced. It's extremely busy and everyone seems to be in a hurry to go somewhere. It gets busier the later it gets into the night! Kowloon is hopping and the streets are crowded at 11pm - it makes the streets seem relatively "empty" during daytime hours.
It was super-humid and super-hot in mid-September. The air quality seems to be quite poor - although you get used to it after awhile.
Overall, I loved Hong Kong and plan to return for a longer visit. It is a fantastic place to visit ... and shop! The glowing neon signs that hang out into the middle of the street are a sight to behold. Very cool place.

Expensive if you are traveling from Australia as the HK Dollar is pegged against the US Dollar.

Mandarin Oriental is the optimum hotel if you are on business relating to financial services as you can walk to most meetings in Central.

Being a little closer to a subway station would be nice. Seniors are free on the Star ferry to Kowloon. It is easy to arrange there in shopping mall by theatre a quick harbour cruise which is nice. Convenient bus connection from bottom of peak tram to Star ferry. Excellent Moghul Indian restaurant at #52 Wyndam Street. Macao pleasant - easy to get around on public buses and great museum on top fort above old cathedral (or what's left of it). Maritime museum closed on Tuesdays. Lots of banks, but only one that seems to want to cash traverler's check is the Bank of China.

The public bus that runs from the airport to North Point (can't remember the number, sorry) stops directly outside the hotel. This is considerably cheaper than the airport shuttle bus and is just as convenient.
You can have an hour's free internet time a day at the public libraries.

On Kowloon side I would recommend shopping, and going to the flower market and the bird market (9:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.) -- take the #6 bus going north on Nathan St. It's about a 20 min. bus ride.
DO NOT SHOP at "Style Shanghi"! It is a lovely shop on the east side of Kanton St. (same street as hotel) and sells upscale Chinese-style silk garments and accessories. However, when I was purchasing a blouse, they snuck an extra 0 in at the end of the price he quoted me -- in other words, they tried to charge an extra $100 (approx.USA)! Luckily, I caught it before I signed the VISA statement! When I called it to their attention, the salesman loudly exclaimed in front of many other customers "You just too poor to buy something nice!" I requested evidence of a voided sale, and he became even more scornful and insolent! So, if you don't want to be cheated, DO NOT shop there! There are lots of similar shops in the Kowloon area with courteous, honest people.
Also, on Hong Kong island, I recommend taking the tram up to the top of Victoria Peak at NIGHT -- the view of all the high-rise buildings decorated with colored lights all around the bay is breathtaking. There are also many neat shops and restaurants up there. But be aware that the last Star Ferry leaving Hong Kong Island for Kowloon is at 11:30 p.m.! If you have 2 free days, use one to go to Lantau Island to see the Po Lin Monastery and other sites. Consider the fantastic vegetarian lunch in the main building of the monastery (do NOT go to the Garden Cafe - dirty and dumpy) -- there is a regular lunch (about $7 or $8 USA) and the VIP lunch ($12) which was outstanding! It's amazing how the Chinese fashion soy or wheat into "mock" shrimp, pork, etc. that really taste and feel like the real thing! Delicious too! Don't be afraid to order unusual things from restaurant menus -- seaweed, octopus, tofu, almond bean curd, calamari, rice noodles, more kinds of mushrooms that I've ever imagined, all kinds of fish -- all were delicious!
There is another full-day trip (can find organized tour if you want) to the inner part of mainland China. Of course they show you just what they want you to see, and there's lots of propaganda -- but it does provide a thought-provoking look at Communist rule.
