Phuket, a great holiday, the water trip to James Bond Island is well worth it. The elephant rides a great day out. The night life with a fantastic show at the Moulon Rouge - Bangla St. all in all a great holiday.

High season in Phuket was at around 30% of normal post Tsunami. Diving trips using Dive the World was good value as they sourced the operators and program within constraints of customer and gave discounts. Another excellent cheap way of sight seeing the island is by suzuki small truck at 800Bht/day. Just remember not much fuel is used so don't fill the tank if your only going out for the day.100Bht petrol would probaby do. White water rafting is excellent day option for novices in this activity.

I enjoyed very much the Khao Sok National Park, about 2 hours drive from Phuket. Superb natural beauty in what they call the "Guilin of Thailand". A pleasant guided walk is just what is needed to see the world's biggest flower, the "Rafflesia".

We are beach lovers and were so glad we chose Karon Beach over Patong Beach. Much quieter, and unspoiled and you can always get to Patong for the evening by taxi very cheaply. Mostly we were happy to stay in Karon and make use of the restaurants etc right there. Did the sea caves tour, but check and make sure you know whether you paddle the kayaks yourself or guides take you. They are 2 different tours. Also found the Muslim fishing village (part of the James Bond Island tour) very interesting. If you are in the market for fresh water pearls, I found the selection and price the best in the markets at James Bond Island (but be sure to bargain!).

I used the Taxi-meter from the Phuket airport. It's much cheaper than using the service at the airport counter. We went for land tour (book a taxi) for sightseeing and shopping. Remember to always bargain the price even though it has a price tag on it. We learnt pretty hard way in our first day. Shopping at Muslim fisherman village (recomended by the tour guide) near the James Bond Island was the best deal, however.

We bought Thai Silk about 1/3-1/4 of their opening price. We booked two tours to Phi-Phi, Maya, Khai islands and James bond island. We went to Patong Beach at night using Tuk-Tuk from our place (again, have to really bargain the fare). There are many tuk-tuk around, so don't rush and you'll get the best deal. Near our hotel, there are some nice seafood restaurants. One of them is owned by German (can't remember the restaurant name). The food is superb and cheap. Finally, one slight negative experience was when we went to nearby shop to buy souvenir and saw that the shop attendant tried to short the changes. Please always count the money given to them and importantly the changes. Have a great and enjoyable trip !

The Phi Phi speed boat island tour is a must, although it can be a bit long. If you don't like a day's worth of bouncing on a speed boat, you should take the big boats which have 100+ people, no bouncing and take longer to reach the island and locations. If you meet local westerners who work in the area they can tell you the best bars and clubs. Scruffy Murphy's was a great pub to hang in - a western crowd drinking pints and watching soccer and no pestering girls. Live music there everyday too. For disco, the Banana Club was great venue with great mix and cool atmosphere. We tried to go to Safari (another club) afterward but it was winding down at 2 am close - this place looked very cool. Outside tables and bar with small lagoon. A cop was standing at the bar at 2 am exactly making sure no one could buy a drink.

Everything is within walking distance for hotel. James Bond island tour is a must. Very good value for your money only 650 baths. The open air restaurants that line the main street is a much for fresh and cheap seafood. Pick your fish and they weight it and tell you the price which include cooking anyway you like. I choose steam with fresh ginger, mushroom and sesame oil. Heavenly. Very fresh. It costs about $4.00 us dollar for a good size grouper.

I liked Patong. We went jet skiing and parasailing, which were fun. The food is good and pretty cheap, there are lots of places to shop, plenty of party destinations, although a lot of the girls you will meet at these clubs are trying to get paid. My friend went golfing, which he said was tough given the heat and humidity in late August. You can get very cheap DVDs at the local shops for about 100 baht ($2.50US each).
