We found the hotel is a good location. Only minutes to the subway. It was also walking distance to the market which is a must visit, the river, shops and restaurants. The staff were friendly and took the time to show us to our room and explain things to us. The bar, however, closes early. Would definitely stay there again.

Very easy to find, just along from Starbucks outside exit 2 of the Karasuma-Oike Subway station ( two stops north of Kyoto station).
The rooms are small, and the air conditioning is quite noisy, but you won't stay long in the hotel with Kyoto to see. The location sells this hotel choice and the ecletic decoration (especially the bathrooms!) will make it stay in your memory a long time.

The Monterey seemed brand new. Very comfortable and clean and most of the staff spoke English. Excellent location right between 2 major subway stations on one of Kyotos main streets. Remarkeably quiet though and within walking distance of the major attractions and restaurants.
